Church of Mary Magdalene The Mary Magdalene church was built in the 13th century and it was extended in the 14th century. It was the single existing christian church in the castle after being occupied by the turks in 1541. It was finally converted to Fethiye (victory) mosque in 1596. It was ruined when Buda was taken back in 1686 and was restored in baroque style. The franciscans got this church after 1698, their monastery was built in the neighborhood. Franz I was crowned here in 1792. It was used by the military from 1817 till 1945. Although it was bombed in World War II, it could have been saved but dictator Mátyás Rákosi decided to demolish it, only the medieval tower was left. The ruins got their present form in the 1980-s, the reconstructed window of the sanctuary was built at that time. The foyer was built in 1792 by Joseph Tallherr.
